Chinese Export Plate

Chinese Export Plate
Chinese Export Plate
Kaolin Porcelain, c. 1795, China

This plate has a tradition of ownership by George Lewis of Marmion Plantation, King George County, Virginia. A younger son of Col. Fielding and Betty Washington Lewis, George served as a captain of a cavalry troop, which, for some time, formed part of General George Washington's personal bodyguard. Broken into thirty-five shards, it was saved by the family and carefully reassembled by a museum artifact conservator.
