Fielding Lewis' Probate Inventory

Fielding LewisThis 1782 inventory lists items in the Lewis house in Fredericksburg after Fielding Lewis died. Objects such as family portraits and clothing were often not listed and stayed in the family after the owner's death.

Note: "Do" is 18th ca. short-hand for "ditto," so an entry noting 2 do stools following an entry for 10 mahogany chairs can be read as 2 mahogany stools. Question marks (?) indicate text in the original document that is unreadable.

Monetary values are listed as Pounds.Shillings.Pence, so a listing of £1.12.6 equates to 1 Pound, 12 Shillings, and 6 Pence. Some values are listed as a numeral followed by a slash, such as "11 Magazines 6/ each." This would be read as "11 Magazines at 6 Shillings each."
