Washington's Birthplace

Memorial House at George Washington's Birthplace

Back of postcard reads: "George Washington was born in this lovely old colonial home on February 22, 1732. Its gardens and lawns overlook the beautiful Potomac River. Dating from 1657, three generations of the Washington family lived here, the first being John Washington, George's great-grandfather."

Note: George Washington was not actually born in the home pictured on the card. This structure, which does not replicate the Washington home, was erected in 1931 as a "Memorial House." It is near, but not on, the site of the original Washington home, which was destroyed by fire in 1799.
