Lime Rick Burn

Lime Rick Burn—a Special Program at Ferry Farm

Saturday, September 24: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

A fiery sight and a rare experience! Watch Foundation staff and artisans Bill Neff and Kenneth Tappan burn a lime rick – a large crib of wood and oyster shells lit on fire – to produce lime for brick work as part of constructing the Washington house.

Guests are invited to interact with educators at both the lime rick and the Washington house building site to discuss the Washingtons’ life at Ferry Farm as well as colonial trades, architecture, and elements of the project, including timber framing.

Weather permitting—updates are posted on facebook.com/FerryFarmAndKenmore; regular admission required. Learn more at http://ferryfarm.org/events.html.

Washington House Construction Charging Forward

With the Aquia sandstone foundation complete, expert craftsmen from Blue Ridge Timberwrights are joining massive wood beams to create the frame of the Washington house. Visit this fall for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the construction firsthand! Learn more on the Foundation's website and in Clint Schemmer’s article, “House Rises On Site Where Young George Slept” in Fredericksburg’s The Free Lance-Star.

Follow the construction on Facebook and on the Lives & Legacies blog.

Please support initiatives across The George Washington Foundation, including building the Washington house, as part of The Future of Our Past Campaign!

New Carpet in the Drawing Room

An important piece of the Kenmore refurnishing project recently arrived—the Drawing Room carpet! Much like the research and planning for the floor covering in the Dining Room, selecting the rug was a significant initiative for the Collections Committee and curatorial staff. We hope you will tour Kenmore again soon to see the magnificent Wilton-weave carpet in place (image below). Until then, watch a time-lapse video of its installation on Lives & Legacies and read more on The Rooms at Kenmore blog.

A special thank you to The Richard C. von Hess Foundation for its support of this project.
