This room is thought to have been used by Fielding as his study/office. The "small room" listed on the 1782 probate inventory held a poplar bedstead and a linen press filled with napkins, table cloths, towels, sheets, and pillow cases.

The lack of plaster ornamentation, the relatively small size of the room, and its proximity to a narrow service passage, suggest that this room received less public traffic than the other first-floor rooms and was of less importance. Because of its inexpensive bed furnishings and simple architecture, this room may have been used by a servant or slave caretaker following the Lewises' move to their Frederick County property prior to Fielding's death in 1781.
