> ABOUT THE ARTIST

The
painting of the Lewis family is called a "conversation piece" and
shows the Lewises, with Washington relatives, in the drawing room of their new
plantation house. This style of painting, which often depicts a family gathered
around the tea table in the parlor (a newly fashionable entertainment room),
became popular in the 18th century. The painting hangs in the Bissell Gallery
of the Crowninshield Museum at Historic Kenmore.
Painting
in 2003, artist Peter Waddell evokes such 18th-century masters of the style
as Johann Zoffany or Arthur Davis. "History painter" Waddell recreates
moments in time at historic sites. A native of New Zealand, he has lived in the United States since 1994. His projects include work for the United States Capitol and Mount
Vernon. Waddell also painted the cutouts of the builders of the house. Staff and friends of Kenmore
posed as the artisans.
